Chambered guitars have become quite popular in the last few years. They offer both unique tonal characteristics, as well as luxurious beauty in appearance. A specific model of chambered design will happen toward the end of 2009; currently they are individually designed by each client. This style of design relies on either a neck-thru or set-neck construction. Set-neck can offer the best chambering designs, while neck-thru always offers the best fretboard access. Mahogany is used for the body, and is chambered before the facing is applied. The body is typically a bit thicker than a normal electric, and the back of the body is left thick to keep enough weight on the body for good balance. The amount of chambering can vary based on the desired tone. The more hollow the instrument, the more hollow the sound. The advantage of chambering instead of full box-style acoustic construction is that the woody tone can be worked into a guitar that still has the superior sustain and response of a standard electric guitar. Likewise, the potential for feedback is greatly reduced. The chambered concept does allow for a large amount of design flexibility, though some shapes can limit the effectiveness of the chambering.
