The Fossil Bass is a concept that had been brewing for years; a classic design that never actually existed. The name “Fossil” refers to the inspiration coming from the earliest electric guitar and bass designs. The “333” is derived from the two most important design elements of the bass. The first is the 33” scale length, the second is the 3 pickup configuration. The slightly shorter scale length was done to give the bass a more lively, deep sound that works well with the passive wiring. The scale length also helps to keep the bass a bit more compact, and easier on the left arm than the normal 34” scale.
The three single-coil pickups were custom designed and built by Aero Instrument. The five-way pickup selector switch captures all of the unique tonal variations possible; the three single-coil sounds, and the two humbucking combinations. This design was the perfect situation for using the Stellartone Tonestyler, which gives the 16 different tone positions. This means that this simple looking passive bass can actually offer 90 distinct tone settings.
The bass is made in two stock variations. The first features a honey-blond sprayed alder body matched with a black pickguard and chrome hardware. The second has a natural oil finished mahogany body with gold hardware and a parchment pearl pickguard. Both variations feature a single-piece quartersawn hard maple neck with either a rosewood or maple fingerboard. This is finished with tung oil, to create the “broken-in” feel of a well used bass.
